Pastor's Message

Once upon a time, a man took his family to church or maybe it was that a family took this man to church…..  Anyways, he had not been in quite some time, but his children attended pre-school there and the folks seemed nice so why not.  What he found when he entered the doors of this church was that the folks were actually nice and no one accused him of heresy even though the man knew that he was a raving heretic and had very little idea of what it meant to walk with God, let alone say a prayer or read the Bible or sing a hymn other than the ones at Christmas.  And within a short period of time, this man felt something inside pull on him.  It was quite an odd feeling, but it was definitely there and this odd sensation seemed to come up whenever there was something this man needed to do.  He felt it when he was invited to attend a Sunday School class.  He felt it when asked to lead said Sunday School one Sunday, even though this man knew nothing about the Bible.  He felt it when asked to help teach a youth Sunday School class or coach a Basketball team or be an usher or join a Men’s Bible study or attend a Disciple Bible Study or become a Stephen’s Minister or go on a Walk To Emmaus.  And all this man had to do was say yes.  Slowly something beyond the pull began to happen as this man felt that maybe, just maybe there was something worth while happening at this church.  Even though this man had been away from church for nearly 20 years, that maybe just maybe church had something to offer that this man needed…maybe even needed desperately.

Then one day after saying yes to so many different things, this man felt that pull again.  This time it was a big pull, to go and serve as a missionary to a church in Recife, Brazil.  Little did this man know that his very small contribution (his contribution was actually to help move dirt around would lead to the completion of an amazing sanctuary just a few short years later, but something else happened on that trip to Brazil in 2005…..

You see this man had some awesome plans going at the time of his departure for Brazil in 2005.  He had a great wife and great kids and a great house and a great job and was making great money and involved in a great church with great people…I think I already covered that…  Anways, everything was great!  Except that this man’s plans did not seem to fit with God’s plans.  And would you believe it that God’s plans for this man was to become a pastor.  I know I did not really believe it myself either!!!  So this man did what he had learned was the right thing to do and simply said yes.  So he went to seminary while still working for that great company and figured out that sleep was highly overrated and reading works by Kirkegaard and Schleimacher was definitely overrated, but reading works by Bonhoeffer and Wesley and Weil were actually fulfilling.  And by the time he graduated, three short years later, this man learned that he was a Wesleyan (who knew?) and that being a Methodist pastor was a good path for him.

So this man left his great company and got a job being a pastor at another wonderful church (you know there are actually quite a few out there) and started to figure out what it meant to be a pastor.  This man will get back to you when he actually figures it out…..

But in the meantime, this man has simply continued to say yes even though there are still days when he feels like a heretic and that many in his congregation know more about what it means to be a church goer than he does.  So this man has simply continued preaching and visiting and teaching (what little he knows) and spending time in the community and with the Scout troop and helping to start a sports league (that’s my boy hitting the corner by the way!!!!)

and continuing to trust that little tug and remembering that his role is simply to say yes…..

Join us and find out how God may be pulling you………..

Leonard  (aka this man)
